Middle School
We know that adolescence can be a challenging time for students, so our Middle School focuses on the integration of intellectual and social skills. The Middle School curriculum builds on the basics learned in Lower School, allowing students to explore the higher-level thinking that results from the mastery of those skills. At the same time, the Middle School’s learning focus serves as preparation for the Upper School by promoting responsibility, respect, and self-reliance.
The middle school day includes a homeroom period, seven 50-minute classes, a lunch period, and a daily study hall. Students in the middle school may also have a daily recess period. Students enrolled in eighth grade are enrolled in high school level courses. Courses at this level are offered at various levels, including College Placement (CP) or Honors (H).
Courses include:
6th: Advance English 6, Math 6/7, South Carolina History, Life Science, Grammar, PE/Art/Music
7th: Advance English 7, Pre-Algebra, Geography, Earth Science, Language Exploration, PE/Art
8th: English I, Algebra I, Ancient Civilizations, Physical Science, Spanish I, French I, PE/Art (these are high school level courses offered at the CP or Honors level)
A commitment to community service and an awareness of global issues are promoted through various clubs, field trips, and activities. These activities offer students opportunities to participate and to lead. All students receive instruction in study skills and organizational tips that enable them to become well-rounded and well-prepared for their Upper School years.
Grammar / Writing Skills
Writing skills aid students in becoming better communicators and it improves reading skills. Students in sixth grade complete a full year course in grammar and writing mechanics, which is not the case in most schools.
Arts
From learning the fundamentals of art and the principles of design to experimenting with various materials, Lowcountry Preparatory School’s visual arts program develops students’ abilities, often with award-winning results.
Honor Code
Our school endorses traditional values such as integrity, honor, and respect. All members of the school follow the Honor Code, which states “A student does not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do.”
Athletics
Athletics is an important and integral part of a Lowcountry Preparatory School education. Each student-athlete has much to contribute and much to gain from playing sports. Properly conceived, directed, and coached, interscholastic athletics provides experiences and lessons that cannot be duplicated in the classroom.
