MUSIC

In the Lower School, Lowcountry Preparatory School’s music students areintroduced at age-appropriate intervals to the basic elements of music, such as rhythm, harmony, and melody. Students become familiar with various musicians, instruments, and artistic movements from across the ages. Each grade learns the fundamentals of reading and writing music. Music class also has an element of drama. Students are introduced to improvisational games and have the opportunity to audition and rehearse for roles in upcoming productions.

The children work hard each year to put on several concerts and plays. These shows are a mixture of solo and choir performances so that students learn to explore their own creativity with confidence and appreciate others’ talents through teamwork.

As you may know, Lowcountry’s Music Department Director Tony Starlight still makes frequent visits to Portland, Oregon to perform concerts. In his December performance at Alberta Rose Theatre and in his newsletter he made an appeal to his fan base to help him to purchase more instruments to help him teach the kids. Very specifically, he wanted high-quality instruments built at a smaller scale, designed for children’s hands, but not toys. Well, the “Starlight Nation” responded, contributing a whopping total of $4546!

Tony donated $1000 of those funds to be used in the classroom of his guitarist Nick O’Donnell, a music teacher at St. Rose Catholic School in Portland. With the rest, he went on a spending spree, collecting instruments for our kids.

Here’s a list of instruments he was able to either collect or purchase for the music classroom at Lowcountry.

Bass guitar, short-scale
Cajón
Steel string acoustic guitar, short-scale
Nylon string acoustic guitar, short-scale
Electric guitar, short-scale and amplifier
